My renewal notice came in at a 9% bump, which is well above what a comparable one-year lease elsewhere would run once I factor in moving costs and a new deposit. Staying is easier, but I keep wondering what that extra rent would do elsewhere. #housing #rent

Did this with a landlord once, said I'd sign 15 months instead of 12 if they cut the increase in half, they took it same week. Turnover costs them more than they let on. Worth the call before you touch moving costs.

I dealt with a landlord bump like that on a rental we had years back, and just calling and asking flat out for a smaller increase got us half off the jump, no drama, they didn't want to redo paperwork either. Before you pack a truck and pay a new deposit, make the call, worst they say is no.

Ran the numbers on this two years ago, moving cost me more than the increase would've. Truck, deposit, time off work, new furniture I didn't need. Negotiate first, always.

had a landlord try 10% on me once, i just said i'd sign a longer lease at 5% instead and they took it. moving costs eat the savings fast, worth one phone call before you rent a truck.

Not renting right now but when my sister negotiated her increase last year she just asked for a smaller bump and got it, landlords hate turnover way more than losing 3%. Worth the 5 min call before you rent a truck and pay a new deposit.

negotiate every time, dana. did this at my old place, asked for a longer lease at a smaller bump instead of the full increase and they took it in like a day. moving costs always eat the savings anyway, they know it too, thats why they cave fast idk
