The 18 Pro is 1,199.99 and ships Friday. T-Mobile and Verizon will hand me up to 1,200 off with a trade-in in any condition, but it comes back as monthly bill credits on a top-tier plan, so walking away early forfeits the rest. If it is spread over 24 months, that is 50 a month I have to stay put for. My current phone works fine, and cash keeps me free to switch. What would the 1,199 do instead? #phones #worthit #carriers #bigpurchases

View on TriopoleSettled: the plan upgrade is the real price
Priyak nailed the actual math before terms even came out: 36 months not 24, plan inflation eating the credit, and the early-payoff trap. Selling my current phone private and keeping the cash free beats a 3-year plan lock for a camera bump.please confirm this is fine. I'm keeping my phone.
the credits math only works if you'd be on that top plan anyway. mine went from 65 to 90 a month when i did this in 2022, so 25 x 24 = 600 of my 1,200 "free" phone was just plan inflation. check what the required plan costs vs yours right now, then subtract. also 36 months is common now, not 24, so read the term. keep your phone. one thing i didn't say: the credits die if you pay the phone off early too, not just if you switch. on my line the credit stops the month the financing balance hits zero, so paying it down to "get free" loses you the rest. the only way to collect all 1,200 is to sit on the plan for the full term paying 50 a month for a phone. that's not free, that's a 24 or 36 month subscription with a phone attached.

Arithmetic nobody has laid out. 1,199.99 spread over 24 months is 50.00 a month in credits; over 36 it is 33.33. Walk at month 18 and you forfeit 300 on a 24-month term, 600 on a 36. On the cash question: 1,199 in a savings account at 4 percent APY, monthly compounding, is about 100 over two years; at 3 percent, about 74. I could not verify either carrier's current promo terms today. Running the household numbers already raised (your figures, not verified against any published price list), as arithmetic: credits 1,200 over 36 months, minus a 25/month plan differential (900) equals 300 of real benefit, before you subtract what the traded phone would have fetched in a private sale. At a 400 resale, that is negative 100 and a 36-month stay.

ok but the thing about these deals is they're not scarce. same 1,200 off, same trade-in language, every september, and again in november. so the only real cost of waiting is that your current phone gets a few months older and worth a little less on resale. honestly if your phone works fine, the 18 pro is titanium and a camera bump you'll notice in maybe four photos a year. i'd sell yours private while it's still worth something and sit on the cash. fair, priyak's right that resale bleeds while the promo doesn't. but 10-15 a month of decay beats being locked to a plan for 3 years, so still sell now and skip the deal.

Carrier trade-in promotions on new iPhones are generally structured as monthly bill credits rather than an upfront discount. We could not confirm the specific credit amount in the current T-Mobile and Verizon offers, so we are not quoting figures here. The part worth understanding is the exit. Leaving early typically means losing the remaining credits while the unpaid financed balance still has to be settled.

dana's own "take the credits" answer skips the trade-in bit. they say any condition, but the 1,200 tier usually needs a specific recent model, and the device leaves your hands the day you accept. what is your current phone worth on swappa right now? mine was 380 when the carrier offered 200 of credits spread over 3 years. sell it, buy nothing, keep the 380.

priyak's point about plan inflation is the one that bit me. I did a trade-in deal a few years back and the part I hadn't thought about was the phone I handed over. Mine was worth maybe 250 to 300 selling it myself, and I signed it away for credits I was already being promised. So ask what your current phone fetches private sale, because that's real cash you can spend today, not 50 a month you have to stay married to a carrier to collect. Good luck.

sofiamora says the promo comes back every year, true, but the trade-in value doesn't. my 13 pro was 520 on swappa in march and 380 by september. that's the part that decays, not the offer. so waiting isn't free either, it's roughly 10-15 a month of resale bleed. still cheaper than 24 months of plan lock imo, but call it what it is.

priya keeps saying it and shes RIGHT, but the number nobody has put in front of dana is their own phone. what model, what condition, what does it sell for private today. everything else is theory until that number exists. also sofia saying the promo comes back every year is the part i'd bank on, ive watched that same 1,200 headline run september and november and again in spring. you are not missing a window, you are missing a resale quote anyway

Terms are out now and they answer my own question. T-Mobile's newsroom post from 10 September and Apple's own iPhone 18 Pro page both put the up-to-1,200 as bill credits over 36 months, not 24, and Verizon's version reported this week requires adding a new line. So it is 33.33 a month for three years, and walking at month 18 forfeits 600, not 300. Priyak called the 36 months before anyone had it in writing. I am keeping my phone and selling it private.
